controling life

This film starts out telling the viewer that this little girl (Amelie) is odd. You find out why she is different quickly because they tell the viewer about her childhood. since she only has physical contact with her father when he gives her a monthly physical she get so excited that it causes her heart to beat erratically which in turns makes her father believe she has a heart defect. After her mother's death being raised by her father only causes her to live in a fantasy world. This point was enforced by the scene were she says that nino has many "friends" but it is actually other kids picking on him. Amelie likes to control the world around her by trying to make it better. When she goes to give back the mans childhood treasures she told us that if the man was happy to get the treasure back she would keep trying to help people. When she helps the different people during the film she always makes sure no one knows that it is her.
Composition of the movie was a little harder to follow (mostly because of the sub titles) but the films frames seamed to reflect Amelie's mood. One scene were this is shown is when she helps the blind man cross the street. The viewer can tell she is in a good mood because as she helps him their is a up beat tempo. When ever she interacts with people the viewer can sort of tell who she feels by the speed of the frames. Another scene that shows this is when she make a copy of the key. they highlight the image of the key in her pocket. When she tries to hide from the people she is helping they always keep her in plain sight.
The lack of socialization when she was a kid caused her to view the world in her own way. As she helps the different people I believe she start to become more realistic about the world. It is with the glass mans help that brings out of her shell. If it was not for the glass mans help she would not have found her happiness or helped the other people. In my opion the glass man played a bigger role in this film than what most people think.

  1. Thanks for posting, Art.
You discussion of character is very good! Its interesting that the pace of the film does vary according to Amelie's mood, great attention to detail! Also, its a good choice I think to keep her in the frame as the people she helps are oblivious to who their "guardian angel" is. What about setting? How did Amelie's workplace, apartment, and even the train stations/fun fair/porn shot she visited in search of Nino add to the complexity and imagination inside her mind? Also, color is prevalent in this film and used creatively, its definitely worth discussing here. Great first entry.
