The setting of this movie jumps between the American and Mexican border. This is done to help and to the suspense of the film. By the characters traveling back and forth between the different countries helps to keep the viewers on their toes. One of the best scenes that shows the suspense created by the characters going between the countries is when Susie goes to the hotel in America. This scene is interesting to the viewer because she starts out feeling "safe" in her home land but quickly believes that she is not safe. Another scene were this is shown is when hank goes to Mexico to try to get answers about the bombing.
This film use lighting to stress several points to the viewer. The most important point that the lighting in this movie is to show witch characters are good and who is evil. The character that I believe is most used to stress whether a character is good or bad is hank the police officer. When we are first introduced to Hank he is lighted by side light. By using this light the viewer gets the feeling that he is bad but you know he is a cop so you think different. They also use a hard light on Hank to show his imperfections. By using a hard light he looks as though he has live a hard life. This belief is confirmed as you learn more about his character. Some of the thing you learn that confirm his hard life are his wife dying and his alcohol problem. Another character that the film uses lighting to enhance the character is Susie. They use a soft light to make her look younger and better. Even though they use a soft light on her the viewer still sees her as a strong person.
The use of the lighting and who the characters interact with each other help to keep the film moving. Their are two sets of characters this comes into play. The first set is Vargas and Hank. they use a lot of bright side lighting on Hank were as Vargas they use a dimer front light throughout most of the movie. The other set of characters is Hank and his partner. this relation ship is based on good verses evil. Hank's partner is the good cop that looks up to Hank for what he has done during his career. he believes that hanks a good cop and does no wrong. After he finds out that Hanks a dirty cop the viewer can see the internal struggle he has with Hank. Hank on the hand starts to go back to his old drinking habits as people start to find out that he is a bad cop. These character interactions are what drives this film in my opinion.

Art,
ReplyDeleteFabulous entry. You touch on both setting and lighting, and your discussion of lighting in particular is very well executed, using the technical terms and divulging creative interpretations which I think are spot on. Good work. My only suggestion to take it a little further with setting would be to consider how the Mexican border, and the corruption by an American cop somewhat hiding out in Mexico can say to larger philosophical issues, or even what the specific locations such as the desolate motel or the tarot readers apartment might say about the people who inhabit these places or even the outside frequenters. Good work, overall.
