Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain

Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain is a clever french film and yet a very humorous fast paced love story. The humor is introduced within literally the first 30 seconds of the film with the birth of Amélie. It goes into very particular and somewhat pointless details from the start about a fly landing, a man sneezing, wind blowing wine glassed to make them danceon a table top, and the birth of Amélie. These were all for humorous purposes in my opinion, and it worked. The film is packed full of these, some that have purpose, others not so much. The overall point of the film is to show how our main character Amélie realizes how she wants to help and better their lives, but then realizes that she is in love and wants to better her own life to help herself out.

Over all the film was definately original. Sometimes confusing, but i honestly think it was because it was reading the subtitles and trying to comprehend the movie at the same time. Definatley a very funny movie that can be viewed more than once in my own opinion, and very enjoyable.

  1. Hey Dom-
    Thanks for posting!
Everything in a movie has a purpose! If its to make the viewer laugh, that's the purpose. In this film, however, the tidbits of seemingly extra information the viewer is given is told to give the character depth and backstory. To know that a man doesn't like peeing next to another tells us he is self-conscious, inhibited, ashamed, and maybe even prudish. Regardless, to know these bits of information makes each character more than what they are in this particular story, it makes them more complex and life-like.
This journal entry was to focus on mis-en-scene, aka the visual elements you SEE in the frame. Mis-en-scene is setting, lighting, character, composition, and cinematography. Make sure to interpret the particular element we focus on that period in your write-ups, and to tell me why you believe the filmmakers made those particular choices.
